Theodor Schiøtz Brewing Co - Bryggeri og Brewpub i Odense Theodor Schiøtz Brewing Co
THE VISIONARY REBEL

THEODOR SCHIØTZ

Pharmacist, lab assistant, voluntary marksman, sailor, rebel, botanist and not least brewer and a bit of an anarchist. Theodor Schiøtz was a man of many faces and talents.

We are especially inspired by his vast knowledge and research within botany, which today is available at for instance Harvard University in the US, as well as his almost rebellious and seditious approach to his time. We are fascinated by his courage and sense of justice, which he constantly proved by swimming against the tide and conventions.

WITH THE HEART IN THE RIGHT PLACE

HUMANITY

Due to his professional pride, Theodor Schiøtz was without doubt a determined leader, but also very human. He for instance introduced paid sick leave in the brewery, in order to avoid financial loss in case of sickness.

PENSION ON THE AGENDA

Today, most people are aware that we need to secure our senior life by means of pension. That was not the case in the 1800s, so the story about Theodor Schiøtz also includes that he made an effort to ensure that his employees and colleagues got a pension plan and disability insurance.

ALBANI WAS FOUNDED IN 1859

ALBANI WAS FOUNDED IN 1859

AND YES - THEODOR SCHIØTZ ALSO FOUNDED THE BREWERY FROM ODENSE

However, he didn’t care too much about hierarchies and titles, which is why he declined having a managing role in the brewery. He wanted to play an active part in the brewing process and product development – yes, it also existed back then. He was on average pay and based his financial foundation on a percentage of the outcome, which the company could generate.

AN ENTERPRISING MAN

By nature, Theodor was a man of action. He would rather take responsibility and matters into his own hand, than wait for others.

NATURE AND THE CITY

He loved nature and botany, and paid for a great deal of the urban beautification.

THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

As a member of Odense’s urban beautification committee, he participated in creating the planting at “Fruens Bøge” and he made his mark on the city’s cathedral, when he financed the moving of an altarpiece in 1885.

NO HISTORIC PERSON WITHOUT ESSENTIAL QUOTES

Theodor Schiøtz is no exception. He is mostly known for this English quote: "The forest is my church and the lark song my law”. Back in 1859, this was a bold stance and it describes a man, who was willing to take the fight instead of going with the flow.

HOW THEODOR SCHIØTZ STILL MOTIVATES US TODAY

100 YEARS LATER

Today, 100 years after that Theodor Schiøtz insulted his last civil servant, his spirit is still part of these walls and our minds. Like him, we are proud to outdo conventions. Theodor taught us to rebel against authorities and expectations. We, carrying on his legacy and name, have made rebellion against ”the expected” our mantra.

THE ANARKIST

Our first brew series, the Anarkist series, is dedicated to this man and to his amazing way of approaching the world.

THE URGE TO CHANGE MEDIOCRITY FOR THE BETTER

To us, it is all about seeing this good man as a source of inspiration on how to act, and in many ways, we see a man ahead of his time. We see a congenial personality with strong and good values, and with a mind and the skills to develop and create things. He had the indomitable urge to change mediocrity for the better. Most of all, because he dared make reality of the reflections that we all sometimes feel coming on.
